One of the biggest nights of the year celebrated its 20th birthday on the 9th November and it was pretty damn cool. Yes, the MTV European Music Awards turned 20 and they celebrated in style. Rap-Queen Nicki Minaj presented the evening in an array of outfits and even performed a mash-up of her songs, including current hit Anaconda.
The biggest winners of the night were Britain’s biggest boyband, One Direction, who took home a trio of trophies which were for Biggest Fans, Best Pop and Best Live.
Ariana Grande opened the ceremony with a colossal mash-up of her songs which started off with a note-perfect rendition of Problem, and she looked great doing it. She went on to beat pop queens Beyonce and Katy Perry for the Best Female award, as well as Best Song for Problem.
The ceremony itself was a disappointing evening with only five of the winners actually being in attendance to collect their awards, in which only two of them actually performed. Nicki Minaj beat rap god Eminem and Prophet Kanye West for the Best Hip Hop gong whilst Bibi Zhou collected her Best Worldwide award, despite no one having a clue who she was. Enrique Iglesias performed a medley of tracks, and even brought out party pal Pitbull to celebrate his World Stage award. Rock legend Ozzy Osbourne collected his overdue and well deserved Global Icon award from guitar guru Slash.
Stars such as One Direction, Katy Perry and Calvin Harris left gaping holes in the show by being far, far away.
Ed Sheeran’s roaring rendition of his current hit Thinking Out Loud was a notable highlight whilst Irish veterans U2 performed a less-than-great performance. Disco diva Kieza and rock saviours Royal Blood definitely got the crowd going in the night’s early stages.
The winners list (check it out below) reads like a who’s who of chart music, with a few odd ones thrown in for good measure (Linkin Park and Bibi Zhou?!). This is the shape of music as we head into 2015.
Now, let’s raise a glass to the MTV European Music Awards 2015. We’re excited already!
